As part of the level 3 Interior and Environmental Design course at DJCAD, University of Dundee we have to partake in a module known as ‘Partnerships, Networks and Connections.’ At this stage in semester 2 we as individuals have to create and develop a personal project, with reference to the module guidelines.
I have chosen to develop my personal project based on a problem that currently exists here in Dundee, Scotland. Research shows that after 4 years of study in DJCAD, most design graduates flee from Dundee in search of design and business opportunities in other parts of Scotland, England, Europe and even America. The reality is this: Dundee is loosing a high percentage of its creativity, particularly through its people.
Plans to renovate Dundee’s waterfront are already underway. The project is known as ‘V&A: Making it happen’ and it’s anticipated to be finished by 2015. V&A at Dundee will be a place for Scotland to celebrate its design heritage and promote its emerging creative talent.
With the ‘V&A: Making it happen’ planned for 2015 it seems only necessary to maintain a high level of creativity within and around Dundee. This level of creativity will be maintained if there are opportunities for design graduates within the city.
This research has helped shaped my idea for my personal project which is to create a Collaborative Design Space aimed at design graduates from the University of Dundee to encourage them to remain in Dundee to continue their talent in design.
The following image is of a recent brainstorm of my idea.
